William "Bill" Willis, an East High School Tiger alum, was one of the first two African Americans to play professional football in the modern era. After winning a National Championship with the Ohio State Buckeyes in 1942, Willis signed with the Cleveland Browns. He won one NFL Championship and was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

After retiring from the NFL, Willis worked with youth in Cleveland and Columbus. He eventually became the chairman of the Ohio Youth Commission. Willis is quoted saying, "This is the type of work I want to do, working with kids."
