Arizona State Transportation Board Approves Two Maricopa Projects

MARICOPA, Ariz. — Mayor Nancy Smith said at the Arizona State Transportation Board meeting that two Maricopa projects were up for approval.

  • Phase 1 of the project is repavement of shoulders and two existing lanes. This is important because they will need the shoulder when adding the two new lanes in a later phase.
  • Purchase of ROW for the Riggs Rd overpass.

Smith asked the board to look back one year. One year ago, she was at the Bullhead AZ State Transportation Board meeting to speak because the project was NOT on the 5 Year Plan. By the June meeting, enough partnerships came together to convince the AZ STB that they could get this vital project in the 2026-2030 5-year plan. She said they pulled together partners including the City of Maricopa (elected officials, staff, residents), Pinal County, the Gila River Indian Community, MAG and state legislators.

“Success!!! Both items were approved!” Smith said. “So here we are today, with Phase 1 about to start.”

She said the project’s importance is well understood and noted that “the loss of yesterday is a reminder.” As the project starts, she urged patience, care and kindness. She asked drivers to drive with caution, follow the laws and work to ensure everyone gets home safely.
